Teacher 1: Good morning, students and teachers. Welcome to our lesson! Tolerance. In the modern world this word is one of the most popular and commonly used.In translation from Latin this word means "patience". In society tolerance is patience to other ideas, looks and traditions. Tolerance is respect, perception and understanding of rich variety of cultures of our world, forms of self-expression of human personality.
Teacher 2: Today tolerance is a bright index of degree of democratic character of every state and one of terms of her development. It is like a password that indicates the belonging to the group of people with modern views of life and personal relationships.
What does the word “tolerance” mean for you?
What is The International Day for Tolerance?
What should be done to achieve peace in the society?
Today we will try to answer these questions.
Teacher 1: What do you know about The International Day for Tolerance?
P 1: The International Day for Tolerance educates people about the importance of global tolerance.
P 2: In 1996 on the 16th ofNovember the UN General Assembly invited member states to observe the International Day for Tolerance , with activities directed towards both educational establishments and the wider public.
Teacher 2: Can you add a few details?
P 3: In order to generate public awareness, emphasize the dangers of intolerance and react with renewed commitment and action in support of tolerance promotion and education, the 16th of November was proclaimed the annual International Day for Tolerance.
Teacher 1: It is a time to learn about respecting and recognizing the rights and belief of others, a time of reflection and debate on the negative effects of intolerance. But firstly, please, have a look at our video called “A tale of tolerance.”
Просмотрвидеонаэкране. “A tale of tolerance. Part 2” (www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJn_nS_E62K).
Teacher 2: Live discussions and debates take place across the world on this day, focusing on how various forms of injustice, oppression, racism and unfair discrimination have a negative impact on society.
What does the term “tolerance” mean for you?
P 1: In the Russian language tolerance means “patience” from Latin “tolerantia”. Tolerance is willingness to accept behavior and beliefs that are different from your own, although you might not agree with or approve of them.
P 2: This concept is defined as respect, acceptance and understanding of self-expression of the human person.
P 3: Tolerance is not just agreeing with one another or remaining indifferent in the face of injustice, but rather showing respect for the essential humanity in every person.
Teacher 1: What makes you the part of all people? This question can be answered by the song called “A song for global peace and unity”
Have you ever wondered, that all humans are the same?
You and I one and same.
Different colors, dialects differ,
Born of a woman we are all the same,
Male and female, poor and wealthy,
Young and aged, we are the same.
Chorus:
One breath, one life, our goal – a better world!
I see you in me, me in you, one and same (2 times)
Different cultures, times and seasons
Diverse mindsets, we are all the same.
So I wonder why the battles,
Stop the killings!!! We are all the same.
Teacher 2: What are the main causes of violence and cruelty in the modern world? Can the differences between people cause violence and brutality? Explain your point of view.
P: Some people tend to blame others in all problems. It is difficult for them to live in harmony both with themselves and with other people. They fear their social environment and even themselves, their instincts.
Teacher 1: From the problems existing today define the one, that you think the most important and involves the procreation of evil and violence:
Social differences;
Age;
Different views;
Religion;
Appearance;
Nationality, racial affiliation;
Parents and children.
Teacher 2: What is the focus of reconciliation and non violence for you?
P 1: A person can express his attitude to family and friends in five ways: generosity, civility, kindness, attitude to them as to him and loyalty to his word.
P 2: When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others.
Teacher:That’s a very good argument.
P 3: We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.
Teacher 1: What should be done to achieve peace in the society?
P: Tolerance is contributed by knowledge, openness, communication and freedom of thoughts, conscience and belief.
P: Behave with people in such a way as you want them to treat you.
P: Martin Ashton once said: “If we could look into each other’s hearts and understand the unique challenges that each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance and care.”
Teacher 2: How important and relevant is the education of sense of tolerance in our society?
P: As Helen Keller said: ”The highest result of education is tolerance.”
P: Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. It is not only a moral duty, it is also a political and legal requirement. Tolerance, the virtue that makes peace possible, contributes to the replacement of the culture of war by a culture of peace”.
Teacher 1:What features should a tolerant personality have? (That’s a very good argument. That’s an original idea. You may be right)Express your point of view.
the ability to listen to any point of view;
the ability to empathy and compassionate;
the ability to care about others;
the ability to solve non-standard problems, finding several solutions;
the ability to understand others:
tactfulness;
politeness;
the ability to be conflict-free.

Situation 1. A new pupil came to your class. Is it interesting for you to communicate with him/her? How do you behave yourself at the beginning of his/her staying in your class?
P: I think it is interesting to meet new people. So I’ll try to establish contacts with a new classmate.
Teacher 1: Situation 2. Imagine, you don’t like one of your classmate but the teacher wants you to sit with him/her. What is your reaction?
P: I’ll try to establish contacts with the neighbor.
Situation 3. Pretend you are a headmaster. One of the members of your staff always has a lot of conflicts with the colleagues. What are your propositions for setting friendly atmosphere among the members of the firm.
Situation 4. One of your classmates asked you to give him a homework to copy. Although you were against he had insisted. During the test the teacher blamed you both that the works are identical. What is your reaction?
Situation 5. You are abroad and invited to the host family. A national dish was served specially for you. But you understand that you don’t like it. What will you say to the hostess of the house trying not to insult het?
Teacher 1: Summarizing the results of the lesson can you answer the question: What is tolerance for you? How do you understand this special word? Let’s make the sun from your paper palms. Stick them, please, around the word “tolerance” on the blackboard.
Ps: Tolerance is mercy and charity,
Tolerance is compassion,
Tolerance is respect for others,
Tolerance is friendship,
Tolerance is patience.
