Effective ways to learn English.
The urgency of the problem of mastering a foreign language in today's globalized world is not in doubt. Learning a foreign language is a complicated process that has individual character. While some people bang their heads against a brick wall trying to learn at least basic words, other people can easily talk to native speakers and read books in original. Why is it so easy for the second group and so difficult for the first? Are there any secrets? Actually, there are some. You can learn some tips in my work.
Topicality of our research can be explained in the following way. In recent decades, foreign languages have been the object of attention and have been learned not only by scientists, but also by ordinary people. It is noted, the role played by foreign languages in the implementation of the impact on the consciousness and activity of the general population is increasing. The importance of knowing a foreign language (usually English) is difficult to overestimate. It is almost impossible to imagine the life of a modern man who does not know a foreign language, because most modern means of communication and dialogues are focused on people, who speak the language. The problem is that people who learn foreign languages should have authentic materials at their disposal and especially contact with native speakers of the language, they should learn and experience a real situation of communication. Nowadays a huge number of authentic records are used at English lessons. It is very important for pupils to communicate with native speakers in real life.
Purpose: to identify and use effective methods and techniques of memorizing English words necessary for successful English language proficiency.
Relevance of the study: is that the vocabulary of English words need to be replenished every day and in this regard, we were interested to know what effective methods exist for this.
Tasks:
Learn how the process of memorizing words, to define the term "memory".
Determine what methods and techniques of memorizing words are most often used by the participants of today's conference in the study of English;
Develop a brochure with a detailed description of existing methods and techniques of memorizing English words.
Subject of research: effective ways of memorizing English words.
Object of study: English language.
The following research methods were used:
Collection of information on the research topic;
Descriptive and analytical method;
Method of statistical processing of results;
A synthesis method.
We live in the 21st century. This is the era of new technologies, international cooperation, space investigation and scientific progress. All these achievements are impossible without fluent knowledge of foreign languages. It’s a common fact that nowadays English is the international language. Present-day English is an immensely varied language, having absorbed material from many other tongues. It is spoken by more than 300 million native speakers, and between 400 and 800 million foreign users.
I want to introduce some methods and techniques effective ways to learn English.
Regular repetitions.
This technique can help you to remember new words and terms better. You need to revise learnt material after certain periods of time and the more – the better. For example, if you are learning new words, repeat them during the lesson, then the next day, then after a couple of days and finally fix those words in your mind in a week.
Top Videos on YouTube or TV program
Popular method of learning a language in our modern society is watching Top Videos on YouTube. Most of them are hilarious. This fact makes the process of learning even more entertaining. Besides, looking at the comments can be beneficial to pick up some words and sentences you aren’t familiar with. Keep on learning a language even when you are plunged into your daily routine. Singing a song in English the way it sounds to you, talking about the weather or any other topic frequently will allow you to improve your pronunciation. Television has always had a great impact on the society. It can also be efficient when we learn English. Due to listening to news, watching soap operas or films we try to understand the subject of the conversation or the plot, we guess the meaning of the unknown words according to the context, we see people’s emotions and follow the changes in their intonation.
Learn a foreign language before going to sleep.
Learning a language is mostly about remembering massive blocks of information. Surely, you also need to understand how the structure and the grammar of this language works, but still it is mostly about your memory. To remember new material better, revise it right before you go to sleep. Some researches show that memorizing things before sleeping helps you remember those things much better.
Learn the content, not only the language.
Not long ago there was an experiment at one University. One group of students studied French in the common way, and the other group learnt one of the basic classes in French. And the results showed that the second group made a better progress in listening and translating skills. It shows that the abstract learning of foreign languages can be less effective than using a language to learn some interesting material. Therefore, try to improve your knowledge by, for example, watching movies in original, or read books.
Very often we are too busy for that. That is why many people spend only 3-4 hours per week for classes. Although, it is better to study maybe fewer hours, but every day.
Newspapers
Another thing that can contribute to faster learning is paying attention to advertisements in newspapers, magazines and street banners. We must always try to understand what we see and read and express our point of view on these issues.
Mix old and new.
We all want to advance in our learning and get more knowledge fast. That is why we often jump to new material forgetting the previous one. That is not correct. It is better to mix new information with already learnt material. In this manner, we not only get to know something new, but also fix the previously studied lessons. If you do that, the process of learning goes faster.
Believe in yourself.
That is, probably, the most important thing. Many people say that they are incapable of learning a foreign language. But it is nonsense, as every person is born with such a capability (we learn our native language, don’t we?). Another thing is that learning a new language can be a bit harder than learning when a kid. But it is definitely not impossible, so go ahead!
My advice to all serious English learners is to approach your goal with a sense of urgency. That means you need to work effectively, but more importantly, you need to work efficiently. Thus, the necessity of mastering foreign languages, especially English, is obvious. Everyone tries to find his or her method or form of learning English. The variety of ways to learn a foreign language is great. We’ve all heard a thousand times that the only way to master English is to be totally immersed in the language, completely surrounded by it everywhere you go.
