Girl: Hello, dear friends! Today we are going to speak about Christmas. You’ll work in teams. We’ll sing songs, recite poems and play traditional Christmas games. We hope everyone will have fun. Let’s listen to the song «Last Christmas».
Boy: But to be able to understand everything let’s revise the Christmas vocabulary.
(Повторениелексикипотеме)
Girl: Now you’ll learn some facts about the history of Christmas. If you listen attentively, you’ll be able to do all our tasks today.
Boy: There are many traditions connected with this holiday. Some of them go back to the past.
Girl: 4,000 years ago people everywhere were celebrating and having feasts at the end of December. They hung evergreen branches on their houses to encourage the seeds to grow in spring.
Boy: Now people decorate their houses with holly and mistletoe. Mistletoe is an evergreen plant with small green leaves and white berries. On Christmas Eve there is a bunch of mistletoe in every house in Britain. Under this bunch boys kiss girls.
Girl: In the Roman Empire they celebrated the life of Saturn. He was the God of agriculture. They wore black make-up on their faces, animal skins on their bodies and strange hats.
Boy: The hats on Christmas crackers today remind us of those hats.
Girl: Meanwhile, in the north of Europe, people were celebrating Yule. They worshipped Odin and Thor, burned big logs, built bonfires, ate and drank a lot, danced and sang songs.
Boy: Now at Christmas we often have small “yule” logs on the Christmas table. But do you know what Christmas is?
Girl: The word “Christmas” means “Christ’s Mass”. The Mass is a traditional church service at which people give praise to God. At Christmas they remember the birth of his son, Jesus.
Boy: No one knows the real date of Jesus’ birth, but 25, December has been chosen as the day to celebrate Christmas. In Eastern Church it is on the 7th of January.
Girl: Oh! What is it? Listen!
Звучит мелодия “Морская малышка”
Сценка «How Jesus was born
Boy: Yes, it was Christmas. But since that time a lot has changed. Many new traditions have appeared. One of these traditions is Santa Claus. But do you know where this tradition comes from?
Girl: In the fourth century in the country we now call Turkey there lived a bishop called Nicholas. He came from a rich family, but gave away the money to the poor. He was popular all over the world.
Boy: What about Father Christmas?
Girl: Well, by the 16th century Saints were becoming less popular, but someone was needed to take the place of St. Nicholas and give presents at Christmas.
Boy: In England a merry old character from children’s plays known as Father Christmas took over the job.
Girl: When Dutch settles went to America they took many old customs including St. Nicholas or Sinterklaas – with them. Gradually his name was changed to Santa Claus in English.
Boy: Now Father Christmas and Santa Claus have become one and the same person.
Girl: One more Christmas tradition is decorating a Christmas tree. After Queen Victoria married Prince Albert the custom of decorating Christmas tree with candles and presents was introduced in Britain
Boy: Another Christmas tradition is sending Christmas cards which bring good wishes to the family and to the friends.
Girl: The earliest known Christmas card was sent by Sir Henry Cole in 1843.
Boy: Our teams have prepared Christmas cards, too. Let’s have a look at them. And the members of the Jury will decide which is the best one.
Конкурс открыток. (Участники по очереди представляют свои открытки.)
Girl: And now let’s decorate the Christmas card. Read the sentences. If you think a sentence is true, join the two numbers mentioned in the left-hand column; if you think the sentence is false, join the two numbers mentioned in the right-hand column. If you make all the right decisions, you’ll have a Christmas card.
