Annotation: this article examines the relationship between self-esteem and the level of personal anxiety in students.
Key words: personal anxiety, anxiety, self-esteem, students, connection.
Anxiety is personality property that affects the cognitive, emotional, and behavioral spheres of a person's personality. In scientific psychology, anxiety is rarely considered and studied from the perspective of personal education.
Modern man lives in conditions where his vital activity is often rightfully called extreme. This leads to a general decrease in a person's sense of security and human security. Anxiety reduces the success and quality of performance of their official duties in people involved in professional or educational activities.
The problem of anxiety is widely considered in the works of both foreign authors: C.D. Spielberger; A. Adler; O. Rank; Z. Freud, who studied theoretical approaches to the study of anxiety, and domestic authors: N.D. Levitov; F.B. Berezin; L.V. Borozdina; A.M. Parishioners, who studied personal anxiety as a psychological personality characteristics.
If we consider self-esteem, then we can talk about the complexity of the phenomenon as a personal education. Self-esteem has the advantage that it performs an important function in human life, namely the regulatory function. A significant contribution to the study of self-esteem was made by S.L. Rubinstein; L.I. Bozovic; A.I. Lipkin; A.N. Leontiev; I.I. Chesnokov; V.V. Stolin; C. Rogers; L.V. Borozdina, O.N. Molchanov, who studied the problem of self-esteem formation in adolescence.
Analyzing theoretical work and research, we can say that the self–esteem of young men is a well-studied concept. But at the same time, there are many questions that have not yet been answered.
Research hypothesis: there is a connection between self-esteem and the level of personal anxiety of students, namely, the higher the level of personal anxiety of students, the lower their self-esteem and vice versa.
Research methods: methods of measuring self-esteem (S.A. Budassi); methods of diagnosing personal and situational anxiety (C.D. Spielberger); Methods of measuring the level of anxiety (T. A. Nemchinova).
The study was conducted on the basis of the Faculty of Physical Culture of the Pedagogical Institute of the National Research University "BelSU" at the age of 18 to 20 years; the sample consists of 1st year students in the number of 30 people (10 boys and 20 girls).
To study students' self-esteem, we measured the level of self-esteem. The results are shown in Figure 2.1.
Figure 2.1. Distribution of students by self-esteem level (%)
In the figure we see that slightly less than half of the respondents have a low level of self-esteem (46.7%). Another part of the subjects has adequate self-esteem (43.3%). A small part of the students have high self-esteem (10%).
Next, we looked at the overall level of anxiety. As a result, it was revealed that the same percentage has a high level (40%) and a low level of anxiety (40%). A small part of respondents have an average level of anxiety (20%).
Next, consider the personal and situational anxiety of students. The results are shown in Figure 2.2.
Figure 2.2. The severity of indicators of personal and situational anxiety of students (in cf. b., max = 100 b).
As a result of the data obtained, we can observe that situational anxiety prevails in the subjects (Mx =50,33) over personal (Mx =40,13). Also, based on the figure, it follows that situational anxiety among students has an average level (Mx = 50.33), and personal anxiety is at a level below average (Mx = 40.13).
Thus, we can say that situational anxiety prevails among students.
Next, let's move on to solving the next task of our research - to identify the direction of correlations between self-esteem indicators and the level of personal anxiety of students. We have compiled a correlation galaxy (Fig.2.3.).
self-esteem
personal anxiety
general anxiety
Note: r>0 r<0 -п - self-esteem indicator
p≤0,05 ------
p≤0,01 = = = - anxiety indicator
Figure 2.3. Correlation galaxy of connections between self-esteem and the level of personal anxiety of students
To identify correlations between the studied indicators, we used a nonparametric mathematical method, the r-Spearman rank correlation coefficient. The indicator "Self-esteem" has an inverse correlation with the indicators "Personal anxiety", and the indicator "Self-esteem" has a negative relationship with the indicator "General anxiety". This result tells us that the higher students' self-confidence, the less they worry about studying and solving personal situations.
We can observe positive correlations in terms of the indicator "General anxiety" with "Personal anxiety". This suggests that the higher the personal anxiety among students, the higher the level of general anxiety and vice versa.
Thus, we can conclude that there is a connection between self-esteem and personal anxiety of students, namely, the more confidence they have in their mental abilities, in good character, the less anxious they are in matters of study and in solving personal situations. Thus, the hypothesis of the study is confirmed.
