A Grand Tour

I. Warm-up. Discuss the following questions:

1. Do you like travelling? 2. Do you prefer travelling by train/plane/car? 3. Have you ever been to Europe? 4. Where did you go last time? 5. How did you spend your time there? 6. Where would you like to go next time?

II. Match the country and the places of interest:

1. United Kingdom

a. Picasso Museum

2. France

b. Vienna State Opera

3. Spain

c. St. Stephen’s Basilica

4. Germany

d. Buckingham Palace

5. Switzerland

e. Canals of Venice

6. Austria

f. Eifel Tower

7. Italy

g. Prague Castle

8. Czech Republic

h. Geneva Lake

9. Hungary

i. Cologne Cathedral

III. Look at the map of Europe; find two or three places you would like to visit. Think of things you want to do there. You can use expressions from the chart as prompts:

Model:I would like to go to the United Kingdom and see Buckingham Palace in London.

IV. Listen to Mary and Bill from the USA who went on a tour around Europe. Follow their route on the map.

V.а) Before Mary and Bill started their tour, they made a list of things they wanted to do or that may happen to them. Look through the list, check you understand the expressions and recollect the Past Simple form of the verbs:

b) Listen to Mary and Bill and mark in the 1st column the things they did/happened to them during their trip.

c) Listen again and mark in the 2nd column the cities where they did these things. Use:

1 - for Paris, 2 – for Venice, 3 – for Vienna, 4 – for Budapest

VI. Answer the following questions:

1. Where are Bill and Mary from? 2. How many countries did Mary and Bill visit in Europe? 3. Was the weather good in Paris? 4. Did they do any shopping in Paris? 5. What did they do in Venice? 6. Why did they choose Vienna among the other European cities? 7. Did Mary like Vienna Opera? 8. What happened to Bill in Budapest? 9. How did Bill get his wallet back? 10. How was their trip?

VII. Imagine that you went on a tour around Europe. Tell your friend about the trip. Use the word-combinations from activity V.
