The earliest form of education in England is nursery. It is not compulsory. In nursery most of the learning is free play. Only counting and writing skills are taught.
In England the new school year starts in September. All students start school between the fourth and the fifth birthday. The school year is made of three terms. They are from September to December, from January to March and from April to June. There are five holidays, too. At Christmas and Easter students havetwo weeks off. In the summer they have six weeks off.
Students in primary school usually do not sit exams and tests. Their overall progress is assessed by the teacher looking at all their school work. They receive a written report describing their learning during the year. Students only take exams twice in primary school: once at the end of year two and once at the end of year six. However, these exams do not effect students very much. They are mainly used to assess how effective the schools and teachers are.
