BAD HABITS
SMOKING
PROCEDURE
1. INTRODUCTION TO THE LESSON
T: Hello! You look great today! I’ve prepared some special words for you on these posters:
“Keep smiling, you are special”.
“I’m glad we’re in the same class”.
“It’s nice to work with you”.
“Be happy, you are special”.
To be happy means to be healthy. It’s the most important thing in the world, but unfortunately “Health is not valued till illness comes”, as the English proverb says. The motto of our today’s lesson is “Each Person is a Creator of a Temple Called the Human Body”.
A human body is perfectly organized creation and it’s in our hands either to be healthy, happy, prevent illnesses or to ruin our health by bad habits
The topic of our today’s lesson is “Bad Habits”. We’ll discuss what a hazardous effect they have on people and what measures should be taken to prevent them.
2. WARM UP
T: Work in groups, discuss and write the list of bad habits you know. (Pupils in groups of the four discuss the list of bad habits and one of the pupils reads it aloud and writes on the board.)
BAD HABITS
Smoking,
Drinking alcohol,
Taken drugs,
Eating junk food,
Physical inactivity
3. PHONETIC DRILL
T: Now listen to the “Jazz Chats” and respond with the group:
Well, he Eats like a Pig
Well, he eats like a pig. He can’t get enough.
He smokes like a chimney. Four packs a day.
He sleeps like a log. What more can I say?
He drinks like a fish Scotch on the Rocks.
When he gets real mad, he hardly talks.
He cries like a baby, when he’s felling sad.
He’s the dearest friend I’ve ever had
T: What bad habits were mentioned in chant? What do the idioms
“He smokes like a chimney”, “He sleeps like a log?”, “He drinks like a fish?”mean?
THE MAIN PART OF THE LESSON

4 to 8 wrong answers. Like most people, there are still a few things you need to know about nicotine.
9 to 11 wrong answers. You’ve got lots to learn about the dangers of smoking. Be careful, you might get burned.
More than 12 wrong answers. Hopeless! Which planet have you been living on? If you’re not careful, they’ll bury you ten years before your non-smoking friends.
5. T: I hope that you’ll learn much more about the danger of smoking in our today’s lesson. But first of all I’d to know what words you associate with the topic “Smoking”.
Brainstorming. Ashtray, nicotine, lung, cancel, heart, disease…
6. T: Just for relaxation let’s play ‘”Pyramid Game”. Here are 7 words connected with the topic. One pupil has to explain it by means of verbal clues or gestures, it’s not allowed to name the word.
1. a person who smokes a lot- (a heavy smoker)
2. a tube of clay, wood for smoking – (a pipe)

Pre-reading discussion
T: Imagine such a situation. A group of young people is smoking.
What will you do if they offer you a cigarette? One boy refuses and says that he doesn’t advise them to smoke as well. Another boy is afraid to refuse the offer and begins to cough, almost faints.
Why do you think he took his first cigarette? Why do people start smoking? (Pupils discuss the questions in groups.)
Sample answer:
To impress friend,
To look cool and tough,
To copy their friends, parents,
Lack of confidence
8. Read the text. What reasons do young people give as an excuse from smoking? Are they different from your previous ideas?
MY FIRST FAG NEARLY KILLS ME
I was just going home after school, when I saw some of my classmates smoking. Before I could open my mouth, they cornered me, blowing smoke in my face and chanting: “It kills 50,000 people a year”. “It doesn’t only damage your own health of those around you”. “Each cigarette knocks life”. “It’s just like kissing an ashtray”.
I couldn’t see why, if they knew all this, they still smoked, but they were happy to talk about it.
Ann says that she started when she was thirteen. Her older sister was going out with a heavy smoker. One night their parents were out and her sister and her boyfriend said jokingly, “Would you like a cigarette?”
She’d said OK, because she didn’t want to look stupid. Smoking made her feel dizzy and hurt the back of her throat but she carried on to impress her sister and her boyfriend. Now she bought her fags from the corner shop, or got them from the friends. She didn’t think there was any point in her giving up, as her mum and dad smoked and her health was still in danger because she was breathing in their smoke anyway. She also said she thought smoking made her look sexy.
Dave said he enjoyed smoking and thought it made him look big and hard. He started smoking when he and his cousin bought some cigarettes and tried them down by the river. At first he only smoked at parties and discos. Later he found a cigarette helped alter arguments with his mum.
In the end they insisted on me having one. so that I knew what I was missing. They suggested that there was something wrong with me if I didn't feel too bad. though it made me want to cough. I took two or three really deep breaths. I started coughing, my eyes watered and I nearly fainted. When I began to look as if I was about to throw up. my classmates, who thought it was very funny, left.
On the way home I stopped to buy some chewing gums to cover up the smell. Got home, cleaned my teeth and held my breath when mum kissed me goodnight.
9. Answer the questions to the text.
1. Why did Ann take her first cigarette?
2. Why doesn't Ann stop smoking now?
3.When is a cigarette helpful to Dave?
4.What did the boy's classmates find funny?
10. Match four of these expressions to the definitions.
Feel dizzy get sick
Cough lose consciousness
Faint feel as if everything is spinning round and you might fall
Throw up send air through your throat with a student Loud noise.
11. Choose the correct phrase to complete the sentences.
1.A heavy smoker smokes a lot /doesn't smoke much.
2. A comer shop is a small local shop/a large supermarket.
3. "I had a puff” means he smoked a whole cigarette/tried a cigarette”.
4. “Hold your breath' means stop breathing/breathe deeply".
12. T:Your homework was to prepare projects about the effect of bad habits on your health.
(Pupils defend their projects and write on the board what side -effects are caused by smoking.)
BAD HABITS
Cause:
Lung cancer. Heart attack. Chest problems. Loss of memory. Ulcer, cough
13. T: What measures should be taken against smoking? We are lucky to be present at an anti -smoking press conference.
Among our guests there are:
Mr. Smith -a surgeon
Mrs. Hatty -a governor member
Robert Barrow -a heavy -smoke
Marian Brian -a member of public, non -smoker
Susie Parker -a reporter
Reporter: Smoking used to be considered fashionable. But now people understand the dire consequences of smoking. At our press conference there is a surgeon. Mr. Smith, tell us please your opinion on the problem.
Surgeon: It's a recognized fact that cigarettes kill 50000 people every year. Bach cigarette shortens your life for five minutes. Smoking causes such diseases as cancer, heart attacks, and ulcers. Tobacco kills more people than alcohol, illegal drugs, AIDS combined.
Heavy smoker: I just can't accept that smoking is so hazardous. It's so good for your nerves after some arguments. It doesn't really harm other people.
A member of smoke quitters club: Look at the facts. As a nation we spend more on tobacco then we do on educating our children or on medicine. Smokers have such diseases as cancer or chronic bronchitis and have to be treated at the nation's expense. They not only ruin their own health but also the health of other people. We have to inhale die poisonous air they blow out. This is of course dreadfully anti -social behaviour.
Reporter: Well, what do you suggest ought to be done?
A government member: First, double the tax on all forms of tobacco. Secondly, ban smoking in all restaurants, trains, hospitals, schools, libraries. Great efforts should be made to inform young people of the dire consequences of taking up the habit.
Member of public, non -smoke: I fully agree. And besides a horrific warning, for example, a picture of death's head should be placed on each packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals we are certainly weak, but if government acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.
Member of, non- smoker: The tobacco industry is allowed to spend huge sums of money on advertising. It's dishonest! We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing out their lungs early in the morning. The advertisements always depict virile clean- shaven young men. They suggest that it is manly to smoke. Smoking is associated with the great open- air life, beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense!
Reporter: let's sum up. Strict measures should be taken against smoking.
Smoking should be banned in all public places- schools, hospitals, libraries, restaurants, bars.
It's necessary to double taxes on tobacco, to raise the price on cigarettes.
It's necessary to ban all kinds of advertising of tobacco on TV. radio, in press.
No T -shirts, caps, bap with cigarette ads.
Tobacco industry should reduce the content of nicotine in cigarettes.
There must be reliable information about medical findings of hazardous consequences of smoking.
14. SUMMING UP
T :During the lesson we spoke about bad habits, their effect on
people's health and found out what measures should be taken against
smoking.
Our body is a magnificent temple and you are to decide either to be
healthy and happy or ruin your life. It's your world.
15. Song "It's a Small World"
It's a world of laughter, a world of tears.
It's a world of hopes, and a world of fears.
There's so much that we share
That it's so much that we share
That it’s time we're aware
It's a small world after all.
It's a small world after all.
It’s a small, small world.
There is just one moon and one golden sun,
And a smile means friendship to everyone.
Though the mountains divide and the oceans are wide.
It's a small world after all.
Evaluation
Home task: to interview- people on their attitude to smoking. How long have they been smoking?
How many cigarettes do you smoke a day?
Can you remember your first cigarette?
Have you ever been able to quit for a short time?
